The Sea and Silence.
Words and or music sometimes influence my painting, sometimes giving me a starting point, a feeling tone, or an emotion that I try to infuse into the painting. I’m especially drawn to music that includes nature sounds and water sounds like soft ocean waves or trickling streams. And often the titles or lyrics help to create an imagined scene or location in my mind that I can step into, kind of like having a virtual plein air painting experience.
Today I discovered this really beautiful music by Deuter, very soothing along with the sound of water lapping the shore. The title of the album is The Sea and Silence. Just saying these words out loud had a soothing affect. I Googled (as I always do) the words “sea and silence” just out of curiosity. I learned more about the music and the artist but it also revealed a fantastic little Air BnB apt in Pozzuoli, Campania, Italy called The Sea and Silence. The apt description is “The apartment is ideal for those who want to relax looking at the sea in total silence, interrupted only by the sound of bells and gulls.” Doesn’t that sound perfect? I spent the rest of the day painting imagining I was there in Italy, with my easel set up on the apartment terrace, basking in the peace and sunshine of this beautiful place.
