Let the image float inside you,
Pass slowly by,
The slightest idea of it,
Will suffice for you.
Sainte-Beuve
Artist statement.
My paintings are about observation and my response to experiences derived from watching and looking and thinking about daily life. Little things like the small quiet solitary moments to others that register as significant interactions with people might find their way into a painting.
While being directly influenced and inspired by the environment that I live in, the effect upon my artwork is more of an intuited response rather than a literal one.
The painting process is approached as a dialog of medium and emotions, building up layers of translucent washes and dynamic gestural strokes punctuated with bolder marks to bring a focal point and balance to the composition. Shapes and evident compositions evolve from this rigorous layering. I usually work in bursts of activity without much deliberation or intent to depict, letting my intuited feelings transform the picture plane into a more comprehensible visual form without any literal translation. It is my hope that the paintings intimate their mystery and allow the viewer the pleasure of their own interpretation.
